How To Choose The Correct Shinguard For Training

Choosing the right shinguard can be quite confusing if you don’t have much experience in the sport. There are a lot of companies out there that make good quality products to fit any budget but they don’t always describe the recommended use and it will come down to your decision. With this article our goal is to help buyers choose a pair shinguards that will meet their needs.

One of the most important questions you should ask yourself is, “What do I need the shinguard for?” For stand up? (stand up examples are Muay Thai, Kick Boxing) Or for Grappling (MMA or Vale Tudo)? This question may seem pointless but figuring out the style of shin guard you need can save you a lot of time and effort.

Below we will breakdown the different types of shinguards on the market. We will briefly describe the benefits of the different styles and how it can affect performance on your specific fighting style.

Types of Shin Guards

There are two types of shin guards that are common amongst fighters. Those for stand-up fighting or those for grappling. Each style has it’s own specific features that either help or hinder depending on the type of training.

Stand-up Shinguards

Lets begin with stand-up. As the name suggests these types of guards are mainly used for fighting styles that do not require ground work, such as kickboxing and Muay Thai. These shinguards come with either a velcro enclosure or a hook and loop system that keep them in place while striking. Over all they are thicker in padding and usually more rigid around the shin and foot area for more protection and does not have much foot flexibility (one of the reason they aren’t very useful for ground work). Some potential issues with using these shin guards for MMA is that they will be more uncomfortable to wear while doing ground work and may injure your sparring partner with the velcro closure and harder materials used. If you are on a budget we would suggest looking into synthetic materials which are usually more economical but sometimes can be less durable. If you are looking for top of the line protection look into thai brands that use top of the line materials (not necessarily leather) and they will last on average 2-3 times longer. Prices Range from $40 example DragonDo  – $120 example Hayabusa shin guards.

Grappling Shinguard’s

Grappling shinguard are another style that are mainly used in MMA training, where ground work is vital. They are very different from the stand-ups, they normally come with a neoprene sleeve and velcro enclosure that surrounds your shin and calves, similar to a long sock that you slip on and fits tight. The padding material around the foot and shin area is also thinner and more flexible allowing the user more freedom of motion and the ability to bend the foot backwards while grappling. These style of shinguard’s can also be used for muay thai and kickboxing but they are better known for grappling.

A common issue that many fighters have with this type of in-step shin guard is that its harder to remove after training because the sweat on the neoprene acts like a suction cup and adheres to the skin making it harder to remove specially after long training sessions. To avoid this issue look for a MMA shinguards with hook and look closures in-stead of neoprene sleeve. If you are on a budget be sure to look into the synthetic leather. Prices usually range from $30 for basic Venum instep shinguard to $120 for a top of the line Hayabusa MMA Shinguard.

Boxing’s Sweet Beginnings – What is the “Sweet Science”?

History of Boxing

Boxing’s Sweet Beginnings

The Terme Boxer

The Terme Boxer (Museo delle Terme, Rome)

The history of boxing dates as far back as human history. Its earliest documented history is as far back as 3000 BC Egypt. Mention of boxing was also seen in Homer’s Iliad during the funeral ceremony for Patrokulus where they had “prizefights” during the ceremony.

Induction into the Olympic games

Cestus

Image of Cestus by University of South Florida

Boxing was officially introduced as an event in the Olympic games in the late 7th century. Fighters would use cestus, soft leather thongs wrapped around their hands and forearms, for protection. During the Roman’s Gladiator Period the equipment changed, metal studs where added to the leather studs and fighters now had to fight to death. As a result boxing was abolished around 393 AD it was deemed too brutal.

Resurfacing of Boxing in London

Boxing didn’t resurface until the early 16th Century in London. The English Aristocracy developed a keen interest in recovering the knowledge and tradition of antiquity. Boxing now became as a means to handle disputes among the rich. Wealthy patrons would support their pugilists and put huge wagers down on their fights. This is where the term prizefighters was coined.

Jack Broughton, by name of John Broughton, the reigning champion from 1734 to 1758, was the first to introduce a boxing school, also formulator of the first set of boxing rules, and inventor of mufflers, the precursors of modern boxing gloves. Broughton invited high society gentlemen to make the change from sponsoring fighters to becoming fighters themselves.

Coming to America

American Boxing Ad

As boxing moved across the sea into America in the early 19th century, it was not very popular at first. Boxing really started to gain popularity when Theodore Roosevelt became an advocate. During Roosevelt time as a Police Commissioner he urged his officers to train in the art of ars pugandi. He believed boxing was a way “to vent out man’s animal spirit”.

When Roosevelt became President he continued to box as a way to keep active and in shape, a practice he started as governor of New York. Roosevelt as a result lost vision in his left eye due to a cross from a young captain. This accident was a tightly guarded secret.

Here is a quote from Teddy Roosevelt Autobiography:

“I had to abandon boxing as well as wrestling, for in one bout a young captain of artillery cross-countered me on the eye, and the blow smashed the little blood vessels. Fortunately it was my left eye, but the sight has been dim ever since, and if it had been the right eye I should have been entirely unable to shoot.”

“Accordingly I thought it better to acknowledge that I had become an elderly man and would have to stop boxing. I then took up jiu jitsu for a few years.”

MSM FIGHT SHOP INTERVIEWS CONOR MURPHY BJJ FIGHTER FROM DUBLIN, IRELAND

Conor Murphy took out the time out of his busy training regiment to do an Interview with us. Conor is an amateur Brazilian Jiu jitsu fighter that trains at Royal grappling academy located in Dublin, Ireland.

He is currently being trained by Roger Dardis and Paul Fox who both are very respected instrutors in Ireland they use a curriculum laid out Marcelo-Garcia (1)by Marcelo Garcia, considered to be one of the best pound for pound grapplers in the world, a 5 time world champion at Black Belt and 4 time ADCC Submission grappling World Champion, in conjunction with his website MG in Action, in order to bring their students the most effective techniques in both Gi and NoGi Jiu-Jitsu.

Interview

MSM: How did you first start training Jiu Jitsu?

Conor: I was a fan of the UFC for a long time, and always considered training MMA. However I wasn’t too keen on the whole getting punched and kicked part! So I decided to look into the grappling aspect and bam! Here I am.

MSM: How long have you been doing BJJ/ Current Rank?

Conor: “I began studying BJJ in October 2013 and am currently a 2 stripe White Belt. I am hoping to receive my Blue before this time next year.”

MSM: Accomplishments/Victories/Record?

Connor: Finished my very first match in 26 seconds with a guillotine! Have only competed twice so far, plan to compete a lot more in the near future.

MSM: Where do you train? What is the name of the gym?

Conor: “Royal Grappling Academy/Marcelo Garcia Ireland – Dublin, Ireland.”

MSM: How would someone go about starting BJJ?

Conor: “Literally type in BJJ in *insert location*”. Then contact the head coach of a school that you like a take a few trial classes. Most places do trial runs so you can get a taste.”

MSM: What is the hardest thing about BJJ?

Conor: “The hardest thing about BJJ is trying to accept that for the first couple of years you’re going to be beaten up on a daily basis, but you’ll love every minute of it!”

MSM: What is a typical training day for a BJJ athelete?

Conor: “For the average athlete, probably class in the morning or evening. A lot of practitioners I know also supplement their training with weightlifting and cardio. At my gym we’re just about to start up a new Strength & Conditioning program.”

MSM: Do BJJist have a special diet and if so what are they?

Conor: “The food held in the highest regard by most BJJ practitioners is the acai berry, native to Brazil. It’s delicious! The diet of a BJJ student usually is quite balanced.”

MSM: Do BJJ athletes have a certain body type like swimmers and gymnast?

Conor: “Nope, not at all. BJJ athletes come in all shapes and sizes.”

MSM: What is it like to participate in  a tournament/competition?

Conor: “Nerve-wracking! But as soon as you step on the mats, the nerves usually fall away and it’s just you and the guy try to make you tap! Try to think of it as just another open mat and you’re rolling with a guy you’ve probably never faced before.”

MSM: What is your favorite move?

Conor: “My favorite submissions are probably the guillotine, armbar, and bow-and-arrow.”

MSM: What are your thoughts about BJJ as a sport and the direction you would like to go to?

Conor: “I study BJJ because I love it, and I do hope that I reach my Black Belt one day. I don’t really care about tournaments, but if I win one or two along the way, happy days!”

What is มวยไทย(Muay Thai)?

The Sport of Kings

Muay Thai is an ancient fighting style originating in Thailand. Used by Thai warriors during times of war and conflict to protect their villages during the harsh beginnings of Thailand. Muay Thai is not just another martial art but a total engagement of body, mind, and spirit.

The word Muay derives from the Sanskrit Mavya which means “to bind together”. The style emphasizes close quarter stand-up striking with your fist, elbows, knees, shins, and feet, as well as clinching techniques to subdue your opponents. The fighting style is called among the Thailanese the “art of the eight limbs”.

Muay Thai’s History

Much of the historical writings on the origin of Muay Thai were lost during the Burmese-Siamese War (1759-1760) where the Burman army burned and sacked the ancient temple of Ayuddhaya. The history that we know was written by Burmese, Cambodian, early European visitors. Historians are still debating on how it all started, but one thing they all agree on is it started as a form of self defense during the beginnings of Thailand. The sport of Muay Thai originated in times of piece during the reign of King Prachao Sua (1697-1709 A.D.). It started to keep soldiers occupied and well trained by having competitions and tournaments among neighboring villages. Rules and regulations were instilled later in its history after its popularity hit the international level.

Muay Thai’s Equipment Explanation

Some of the equipment used during competitions have major significance to the Thai culture. The mongkol, the headpiece, are blessed by Buddhist monks and are believed to bestow victory to the wearer. The mongkol is not suppose to touch the ground or be touched by the fighter hands. Reason behind this practice is to keep the blessing of the monks pure without being tainted by the ground. This is why you see Thai fighters going over the ropes of the ring and not through them.

The prajioud, armband, is another piece worn by fighters they are deeply rooted to the beginnings of Muay Thai. Mothers tore pieces of their surong (dress, cloth) when their sons would go off to war for good luck and protection. Westerns have changed the meaning of these pieces and made them to signifying ranking, which is absolutely not the case. Muay Thai differs among many of the martial arts because ranking is not earned through the amount of years an individual practices and trains but rather on his/her accomplishment and performance in the ring.

The Modern Muay Thai gloves did not exist until after deaths occurred due to the use rope-bindings on their hands for competitions. Muay Thai Gloves differ than boxing gloves in that the position of the thumb is a little more forward to allow for better clinching. The palms of Thai boxing gloves have padding to be able to block kicks and punches. Overall the glove is a lot smaller than traditional boxing gloves.
